This presentation will provide an overview of pain behaviors as it relates to providing chiropractic care in animals including:
- Defining pain versus nociception – types of pain
- Exploring pain myths
- Review of spinal pain mechanisms
- When is it true pain versus just ‘bad behavior’?
- Pain descriptors and attributes in animals versus humans
- The ideal pain scale
- Methods for assessing pain – subjective versus objective, indirect versus direct
- Behavioral indicators for foot, limb, and axial skeleton pain
- Pain scales – strengths and limitations
- Facial grimace scores and ethograms
- Response to physical contact – light touch, deep pressure, and movement
- How to know when the pain is too much

I am an Associate Professor at the Orthopaedic Research Center at Colorado State University with research interests in the objective assessment of musculoskeletal pain, spinal dysfunction and the application of chiropractic, acupuncture, and rehabilitation of horses.
I am a charter diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and am currently a course instructor for the Equine Rehabilitation Certification course at the University of Tennessee.
